In one situation, there was a minor snag that they bent over backwards to fix immediately and in another situation, we needed a rush order, and they were able to truly leap buildings in a single bound to make it happen. The following story was submitted by an employee of University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics: Yesterday morning, Sarah Kedley, an SOS nurse, went to the HR Satellite office looking for items she could give to a needy patient. The patient is homeless and had been assaulted before coming to UWHC. His shopping cart and backpack with his all of his belongings were stolen. When he arrived at the hospital, he was wearing his only possessions. Sarah said that some of the nurses on the unit worked to find shoes for the man, but he didn't have anything else. Nancy Miller Webster in the HR office connected Sarah with me to see if we had anything to give this gentleman. Dawn Davis (Clinical Marketing Representative) quickly went through her closet of branded merchandise to see what we could offer. She also called our representative at Ad Madison, Karen Weisbrod, to see if she had any samples to contribute. The patient was about to be discharged, but Sarah stalled him long enough for us to get our items to the hospital. Within 45 minutes of Sarah's initial call to me, we delivered a backpack, hat, gloves, blanket, water bottle, umbrella, shirt and jacket for the patient. Sarah wrote to me, "When I delivered his care package, he was reduced to tears. His smile will stay with me for a lifetime, but what hit me the hardest was the look he gave me. It was as if every current stressor in his life was gone. With one look, this man of so few words will be a permanent reminder of why I do what I do... What (we) provided with only minutes' notice has impacted a life. I only wish that you could have come to the unit to be a part of his early Christmas. It is on days like these that you can see a light at the end of a tragedy." To me, Sarah, Nancy, Dawn and Karen exemplify the kind of service excellence we so often speak of. They went above and beyond to make sure this man at least had what he needed to replace his belongings. I can't take any credit other than being the messenger, but I am certainly proud to know I work with kind and generous people like Sarah, Nancy, Dawn and Karen.
